M4 Control Systems is a control systems integrator specializing in automation and controls for the food and dairy industry. We design and implement the electrical and software systems that power modern manufacturing facilities, including control panels, electrical schematics, PLC programming, HMI development, robotics integration, and onsite commissioning.
We are seeking a Summer 2027 Automation & Controls Engineering Intern to join our Utah team. This internship provides an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience supporting industrial automation and controls projects while working alongside experienced engineers and industry professionals.
Position Summary
The Summer 2027 Automation & Controls Engineering Intern is responsible for supporting the execution of automation and control projects for M4 Control Systems customers. This position may be involved in multiple phases of projects, including system design, programming, testing, startup, troubleshooting, commissioning, and customer support.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the development, modification, and troubleshooting of PLC programs to support customer automation and control projects.
- Assist with the development and modification of HMI applications for industrial control systems.
- Support the preparation of electrical and control system documentation, including control panel layouts, network diagrams, system architectures, and electrical schematics.
- Assist with control panel layout, assembly, testing, and build support activities.
- Participate in project planning, testing, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer support activities.
- Support robotics and automation system integration projects.
- Work with customers, project managers, engineers, technicians, and other project team members to support the successful implementation of automation solutions.
- Gain exposure to industrial control system networks and related hardware.
- Assist with troubleshooting automation, controls, and electrical system issues both remotely and at customer facilities.
- Prepare and maintain project documentation, including drawings, programming documentation, test records, and system operating information.
- Learn and apply industry standards, control system best practices, and M4 Control Systems’ engineering processes.
- Participate in customer site visits and field support activities as opportunities arise.
- Conduct yourself in a manner consistent with M4 Control Systems’ mission, values, policies, code of ethics, and standards of conduct.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering, Automation Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related engineering or technical field.
- Strong interest in industrial automation, controls engineering, robotics, or manufacturing systems.
- Basic understanding of control systems, PLCs, HMIs, electrical components, instrumentation, and industrial networks.
- Strong technical problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents, drawings, and schematics.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with coworkers and project teams.
- Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a project team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
- Coursework, laboratory experience, or project experience involving PLCs, robotics, automation systems, manufacturing systems, or electrical design.
- Familiarity with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation platforms, including Studio 5000 and FactoryTalk View.
- Familiarity with industrial communication networks and protocols, including EtherNet/IP.
- Experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks Electrical, or similar engineering software.
- Experience with programming languages, databases, or development tools such as Visual Studio, SQL, Python, or similar technologies.
- Participation in engineering clubs, robotics teams, design competitions, research projects, or previous internships.
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver's license preferred.
- Ability and willingness to travel periodically to customer facilities for project support activities.
- Ability to work safely in industrial manufacturing environments and around operating equipment.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
